Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying such medications must be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
